VA Commission for the Arts Conference 2011

The crumby weather yesterday didn't ki-bosh the creative connections and inspired lectures at this years Advocacy for the Arts Convention.  While attendance might have suffered a bit as a result of the dreary day, discussions of innovation, imagination and education danced in the halls.

(did you enjoy all the above alliteration?)
Below is an image of the room dedicated to the Workhouse Arts Center, home to over 100 artists, which saw quite a bit of foot traffic.
Lucky for us photographer, Ed Kirkpatrick, took these photos.  I was too busy yucking it up with anyone who even glanced in my direction.  I did complete one painting in spite of all my gabbing.  I started to get another piece going and then we were cut loose early.  The storm was en-route to Northern VA and schools were closing early.  So I packed up all my gear and split.  I think it was a successful day.

Gasp! I've Been Invited to Exhibit and Demo...Where?

Tomorrow I will be heading down to Richmond, VA.  Why you ask?  Friends I am happy to share that I have been invited to exhibit and discuss my work at the 2011 Advocacy of the Arts Convention.  I can't wait to share all the great things happening at the Workhouse Arts Center where I work beside some of the states finest artists.
My book:  Real Life Drawing, My Eye on Washington DC will be available for sale, but if you've already purchased a copy, bring it in and I will be happy to sign it for you.  The exhibit will consist of some of the remaining pieces from the book and newer works created after publication.
Now as far as the demo goes,  I will be demonstrating and creating images for my new series - Real Life Drawing is a Parade! Spotlight on the Philadelphia Mummers (working title)  All of these images will be created on the pages of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Banjos Banjos and more Banjos

Work in Progress: Woodlands Banjo Boys

Playing With Props

I've sketched in the first few layers of the composition.  I really was impressed with the set the Woodlands String Band built.  I thought I might have a little fun with the props.  I'm not really sure where this piece is going?  We'll all find out soon enough.

Happy New Year!!!
I'll post the completed version soon.
Just so you all know,  it is really hard to remember to stop and photograph each layer of pastel.  I do my best to record the steps, but sometimes I do forget as I get caught up in the moment.

Maddie from Philly

This little sweetie died two days after Thanksgiving.  The family was devastated, especially the children.
Maddie was an old lady and lived a long happy life. With her family at arms length, she exhaled for the final time.  Her doggie spirit made it's way to the heavens.  She was gone and the family was minus one.

I have some experience dealing with the death of loved one.  It was very difficult for me.  My private loss became a public event.  There was the viewing, the funeral, and visit to the cemetery.
I hated the way people looked at me after hearing about my loss. I grew furious when people would say they were sorry.  I wanted to rip the face off of the people who said things like time heals all wounds.   I can both emphasize and sympathize, yet I find myself silent and in a pickle.
What do you say?  What do you do?

I pray the Hail Mary.  I ask for her intercession as I rely on her grace to find peace and meaning.   When my strength returns I paint.
So I painted, Maddie from Philly,  to pay homage to a family I love so very much.
